Trainer Tip: Linked Courses

Our SchoolTool trainers are experts in providing training and support for using our comprehensive student management system. Every month, we'll share a tip to help teachers/faculty members, and administrators get the most out of our system. In this month's trainer tip, we'll be exploring linked courses.

Unlocking Enhanced Scheduling with Linked Courses in SchoolTool

The primary purpose of linking one course (called the "sub" course) to another (called the "main" course) is to gain access to additional scheduling functionality in SchoolTool.

Typically, these linked courses are not graded, so grades and assignments for these courses will not have all the same viewing options that the main course will.

If a student has a course selection for the main course, when the Student Schedule Builder is run, the student will automatically be scheduled into the main course AND the linked course.
To configure a link between courses in Scheduling > Course Catalog, make sure to link "sub" courses (such as labs) to "main" courses (such as lectures), and not the other way around.

By default, linked courses can also be dropped, withdrawn, and switched separate from the main course.

In Maintenance > Counseling > Building School Level Options, if the Drop/Withdraw/Switch Linked Courses option is checked, Counselors will have the option to automatically perform these operations on linked course sections at the same time as the main course.
