Modernizing Donor Screening: Cloud Migration for Enhanced Data Utilization

We collaborated with a leading provider of diagnostic solutions that offers automated solutions to streamline blood and plasma screenings. This provider ensures the safety and reliability of the blood and plasma supply through comprehensive donor screening technologies.

Our story today focuses on a technology that connects our customers' devices in their labs to the company's central hub for data storage. This data is utilized for reports, customer service features, and various other functional groups. The technology is essential for assisting customers with technical support and service, identifying quality issues, and contributing to future product development efforts.

Opportunity

Meeting Evolving Needs in Donor Screening Data Management

Mindex had previously re-platformed and modernized other core infrastructure instruments for our client, transitioning their data processing to the cloud. Additionally, our cloud data team established a data lake for these core instruments, providing access to two years of historical data for investigation. These efforts successfully resolved system saturation issues and backlog process challenges.

Our latest project focused on migrating our client's 20+ year-old technology infrastructure for Donor Screening to the cloud. This involved building a data lake and APIs to facilitate reporting and analytics. Recognizing the challenges associated with aging technology, our client identified critical areas for improvement, including:

  1. Modernize 20+ year old technology: The infrastructure supporting donor screening is over 20 years old, requiring modernization. By migrating servers from on-premises to a cloud-hosted environment and establishing a data lake, our client can achieve enhanced scalability, stability, performance, and security.

  2. Real-Time Enablement for Technical Support Services (TSS): This project involves upgrading the architecture to support real-time enablement for technical support services (TSS). The goal is to enable support specialists to request instant, on-demand data refreshes from instruments, which previously could take 20–30 minutes to update. By eliminating this delay, they can promptly access the data answers they need.

Solution

Migrating to AWS Cloud-Based Environment

To address these critical needs, our team collaborated with our client to formulate a migration strategy for migrating their technology for Donor Screening to an AWS cloud-based environment. We leveraged various AWS services such as AWS Lambda, Glue, DMS, S3, Redshift, DynamoDB, SNS, and Aurora RDS to build a data lake and data processing infrastructure for Donor Screening.

Outcomes of Migration

Enhancing Data Management Capabilities

Our team successfully replatformed our client's technology infrastructure for Donor Screening, providing them with access to two years of data for investigation as requested. Here are some additional benefits our client can now take advantage of due to our cloud-based environment:

Improved Data Structure:

By migrating our client's technology from on-premises servers to cloud-hosted AWS infrastructure and utilizing AWS Lambda, Glue, and DMS, our team has streamlined data handling and migration processes, establishing a robust and scalable data infrastructure.

99.65% Efficiency Gains:

The transition from on-premises data processing to cloud-based solutions resulted in significant efficiency gains. For example, data processing tasks that were previously performed once a day are now completed every five minutes, thanks to AWS Glue. This leads to faster data availability for analytics and reporting purposes.

Near Real-Time (NRT) Data Availability:

With NRT data, where data can be accessed within an average of 40.25 seconds, our client can pull data almost immediately as it is generated. This capability allows for more efficient decision-making and provides more accurate insights into machine performance and test results, enhancing overall operational effectiveness. Additionally, NRT data enables a rapid response to potential issues, minimizing downtime and optimizing productivity.
